Game description:

Released in 1992 for the Super Famicom, Dragon Ball Z: Super Saiya Densetsu (Legend of the Saiyans) is a unique card-based RPG that covers the Saiyan and Frieza story arcs of the classic anime. Rather than traditional turn-based menus, you navigate the world map and engage in combat using a randomized deck of cards. Each card dictates your movement speed outside of battle and your attack and defense strength during fights, relying on the classic Battle Power (BP) system to measure character strength against enemies like Raditz, Nappa, and Frieza.

How to Play

Guide Goku, Gohan, Piccolo, and other Z Fighters through the story by drawing cards for both movement and turn-based combat. The star value on a card indicates its attack power, while the kanji symbol determines the defense rating and can trigger special attacks if it matches a character’s fighting style. The default SNES controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the Arrow Keys to navigate, Z and X for the A and B buttons (to confirm or cancel actions), A and S for Y and X, and Enter for Start.

Tips

  • Match the Kanji: Always try to use a card with a kanji symbol that matches your character’s martial arts school (like the “Kame” symbol for Goku or Krillin). This grants a significant boost to their attacks and allows them to perform devastating signature moves.
  • Save High-Value Cards: Hold onto cards with a “Z” attack rating (the highest possible) for boss fights, rather than wasting them on random encounters.
  • Level Up Early: Take time to grind random battles before Nappa and Vegeta arrive, as you will need the combined strength of all your fighters to survive the punishing difficulty of the early game.
