Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine is a competitive puzzle game released by Sega and Compile for the Master System in 1994. Serving as a Western adaptation of the popular Puyo Puyo series, the game swaps the original characters for villains from the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog animated series. Players must defeat twelve of Dr. Robotnik’s underlings in head-to-head puzzle battles to save the citizens of Beanville.
How to play
Beans fall from the top of the screen in pairs. Your goal is to connect four or more beans of the same color vertically, horizontally, or in an L-shape to clear them from the board and send clear or “Refugee” beans to your opponent’s screen. The match ends when a player’s board fills to the top. Use the arrow keys to move and drop the beans, and Z or X to rotate them.
Tips
- Build chains: Clearing a single group of four sends minimal garbage. The key to winning is arranging beans so that clearing one group causes falling beans to immediately clear another group, creating a devastating chain reaction.
- Keep the third column clear: Beans enter the board from the top of the third column from the left. If this specific column fills to the top, you instantly lose, even if the rest of the board is empty.
- Watch your opponent: If your opponent is building a massive chain, try to quickly clear small combos to drop garbage on their board and disrupt their setup before they can trigger it.
