Game description:

Doomsday Warrior is a 1992 2D fighting game for the SNES developed by Telenet Japan’s Laser Soft division and published in North America by Renovation Products. Releasing in the wake of the 16-bit fighting game boom, it stands out with a unique RPG-lite progression system that awards Ability Points after every match, allowing you to upgrade your character’s stats like Arm Power, Leg Power, and Vitality. You select a defecting member of the villainous Doom Squadโ€”including oddball characters like a dancing plant or a living liquidโ€”and battle the rest of your former team to save Earth.

How to Play

Choose your fighter and defeat the other members of the Doom Squad in one-on-one combat, choosing your next opponent after each victory. The game uses standard SNES controls, mapped to your keyboard in the browser: use the Arrow Keys to move and jump, and the A/S/Z/X keys for your face buttons (punches and kicks). Unusually for the genre, blocking is handled with dedicated buttonsโ€”the L and R shoulder buttons (often mapped to Q and W)โ€”rather than by holding away from your opponent.

Tips

  • Specialize your stats: When spending your Ability Points between matches, it is much more effective to heavily upgrade the attack type you use most (either Arm Power or Leg Power) rather than spreading your points evenly across all stats.
  • Charge your specials: Most special attacks are charge-based. Holding the initial directional input longer before unleashing the move will significantly increase both its damage and its range.
  • Abuse the block button: Blocking with the shoulder buttons negates 100% of damage from normal attacks. Turtling and waiting for the aggressive AI to leave itself open is a very effective strategy.
