Released by Nintendo in 1981, Donkey Kong is the landmark arcade platformer that introduced the world to both Mario (originally ‘Jumpman’) and the titular barrel-throwing ape. Players climb construction sites, dodging hazards to rescue Pauline in one of the most influential titles of the golden age of arcade cabinets.
How to Play
The objective is to guide Mario to the top of each stage by climbing ladders, jumping over rolling barrels, and avoiding moving hazards. In this browser-based arcade version, use the Arrow Keys to move and climb. Press Shift to insert a virtual coin, then press Enter to start. Use Z or X to jump.
Tips
- When climbing a ladder, push all the way up before moving left or right, or Mario will lose his grip and fall.
- Grabbing the hammer lets you smash barrels for extra points, but you cannot climb ladders while holding it.
- Pay attention to the direction barrels are rolling; they can randomly drop down ladders instead of rolling past them.
