Donkey Kong Jr. puts you on the other side of the original game: Junior, Donkey Kong’s son, must rescue his father from Mario’s cage. Nintendo’s 1982 platformer arrives on the Atari 2600 as a vertical climber — grab vines and chains, dodge Snapjaw creatures and birds, and work your way up through each stage to free the big ape.
How to Play
Arrow keys move Junior left and right and steer him onto vines; Spacebar jumps. The core skill is timing: hanging on a vine, leaping across gaps, and reading the enemy patrols without rushing into them. When two vines run close together, grabbing both at once lets Junior ascend at double speed — a technique the later, more crowded stages effectively require.
Controls
| Move / Climb | Arrow keys (P1) / T G F H (P2) |
| Jump | Spacebar (P1) / A (P2) |
| Pause | Alt+P |
| Reset | F12 |
| Select | F11 |
Tips
- Use the double-vine climb whenever two vines run parallel — it is noticeably faster and becomes essential once enemies start crowding the screen above you.
- Snapjaws patrol from both sides. Stopping at a safe branch and letting them pass below is usually safer than trying to outrun them.
- Tap Spacebar for a short hop, hold it briefly for a full jump — controlling that arc is the difference between landing on the next vine and falling past it.
