Donkey Kong Classics is an action-platformer compilation released for the NES in 1988, bundling two of Nintendo’s most iconic arcade games onto a single cartridge: Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. In the first game, you play as Mario (originally “Jumpman”) scaling construction sites to rescue Pauline from the giant ape. In the sequel, the roles are reversedโyou control Donkey Kong Jr. climbing vines and chains to rescue his captured father from Mario.
How to play
In Donkey Kong, your goal is to reach the top of each stage by climbing ladders and jumping over barrels thrown by the ape. In Donkey Kong Jr., you must collect keys to unlock your father’s cage while avoiding enemies like snapjaws and nitpickers.

Tips
- In Donkey Kong Jr., climbing two vines at once is much faster than climbing a single vine, but descending is faster when sliding down just one.
- In Donkey Kong, you can use the hammer to smash barrels and fireballs for extra points, but remember that you cannot jump or climb ladders while holding it.
- Grab Pauline’s lost items (like umbrellas and purses) in Donkey Kong for bonus points.
