Donkey Kong 64 is a classic 3D platformer developed by Rare and released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999. In this expansive collectathon, King K. Rool has kidnapped Donkey Kong’s friends and stolen his hoard of Golden Bananas. You must explore massive, vibrant worlds to rescue Diddy, Lanky, Tiny, and Chunky Kong, then use their unique abilities to gather collectibles and foil K. Rool’s plans to destroy DK Isle.
How to Play
Your main objective is to explore each world, collect Golden Bananas to open new areas, and defeat bosses. Each of the five Kongs has specific color-coded collectibles they can pick up, so you will need to switch characters frequently using Tag Barrels. In your browser, the standard N64 controls map the analog stick to the Arrow Keys, X for the A button (jump), C for the B button (attack), and Z for the Z-trigger (crouch). The C-buttons are typically mapped to W, A, S, D for camera movement and special abilities, while Enter acts as Start.
Tips
- Listen closely: Many collectibles, like Golden Bananas and Blueprints, emit distinct sound effects. Use these audio cues to track down hidden items.
- Revisit levels: You won’t be able to collect everything on your first visit to a world. As you unlock new Kongs and abilities, return to previous stages to access new areas.
- Buy upgrades: Always drop by Cranky’s Lab, Funky’s Store, and Candy’s Music Shop when you have enough Banana Coins to purchase crucial potions, weapons, and instruments.
