Game description:

Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei is a landmark 1987 dungeon-crawling RPG developed by Atlus and published by Namco for the Famicom (NES). As the foundational game that launched the massive Megami Tensei franchise, it introduced the series’ signature mechanics: exploring grueling first-person 3D labyrinths, negotiating with enemy demons to recruit them, and fusing them together to create more powerful allies. Players control Akemi Nakajima and Yumiko Shirasagi on a daunting descent into the Demon City of Daedalus to defeat Lucifer.

How to Play

Navigate the maze-like dungeons in first-person, fighting turn-based random encounters and managing your party of recruited demons. The NES controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the arrow keys to move through the labyrinths, Z for the A button (confirm/attack), X for the B button (cancel), Enter for Start, and Shift for Select.

Tips

  • Map carefully: The dungeons are sprawling and unforgiving, and there is no auto-map. Consider drawing your own map on grid paper or relying heavily on the Mapper magic spell.
  • Fuse constantly: Demons do not level up from combat. To keep up with increasingly difficult encounters, you must regularly return to the Jakyo Manor (Heretic Mansion) to fuse your current demons into stronger ones.
  • Manage your Magnetite (MAG): Summoned demons consume MAG with every step you take in the dungeon. Keep an eye on your reserves, and unsummon demons if you are running dangerously low while exploring.
