Developed by Rare and released in 1990, Digger T. Rock: The Legend of the Lost City is a unique puzzle-platformer for the NES. Playing as the titular miner, you must dig through subterranean caverns, blast rocks with dynamite, and gather gems to uncover the mythical Lost City. It blends traditional platforming with strategic digging mechanics, requiring you to carefully carve paths through dirt blocks while avoiding cave-ins and subterranean enemies.
The goal of each cavern is to locate the exit door and the special pillar that opens it. Once you step on the pillar, a timer begins, and you must race to the open door before it slams shut. The default NES browser controls use the Arrow Keys to move, climb, and dig in the direction you are facing. Press Z (B button) to use your current item, X (A button) to jump, Enter (Start) to pause, and Shift (Select) to cycle through your inventory of tools.
Tips
- Conserve Dynamite: Explosives are scarce and necessary for clearing solid rock barriers that your shovel cannot break. Always look for alternative dirt paths before using a stick.
- Mind the Timer: Do not trigger the exit pillar until you have cleared a direct, unobstructed path to the door.
- Beware of Falling Rocks: Digging directly underneath a boulder will cause it to drop and crush you. Dig around them or use them to squash enemies.
