Game description:

Devil World is a classic 1984 maze game developed for the NES by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka. Playing as a green dragon named Tamagon, you must navigate treacherous mazes to collect crosses and bibles while dodging demons. Famous for being one of the few early Nintendo titles not originally released in North America due to strict censorship policies, it remains a charming and uniquely challenging piece of gaming history.

How to play

The objective is to clear the maze of dots and items with a unique twist: the Devil at the top of the screen constantly commands his minions to scroll the maze in different directions. You must avoid being crushed against the edges of the screen by the shifting boundaries.

Use the Arrow Keys to move Tamagon. Once you pick up a cross, press Z or X to breathe fire and defeat enemies. Enter acts as Start and Shift acts as Select.

Tips

  • Pay close attention to the Devil’s pointing finger at the top of the screen; it indicates which way the maze will scroll next, allowing you to move away from the collapsing edges.
  • In the second phase of each level, your goal is to collect four Bibles and place them in the seal at the center of the maze. Focus on securing them rather than hunting enemies.
