Devil World is a 1984 maze action game for the NES developed by Nintendo and directed by Shigeru Miyamoto. Often compared to Pac-Man, the game introduces a dynamic scrolling mechanic controlled by the titular Devil, forcing players to constantly adapt their route to avoid being crushed by the moving screen boundaries. Due to Nintendo of America’s strict policies against religious iconography at the time, this remains the only NES-era game by Miyamoto that was never officially released in North America.
How to Play
The objective is to clear the maze while surviving the constantly shifting screen. Each round consists of different phases: first, you must collect crosses to gain the ability to breathe fire and consume dots; next, you must gather four Bibles and place them into the central seal. Default NES controls apply: use the D-pad to navigate the maze, A or B to breathe fire when powered up, and Start/Select to pause or choose options (mapped to arrow keys, Z/X, and Enter/Shift in the browser).
Tips
- Keep an eye on the Devil at the top of the screen. He points in the direction the maze is about to scroll, allowing you to anticipate the movement and avoid getting trapped against the edges.
- Prioritize grabbing crosses as soon as they appear; without one, you are completely defenseless against enemies and cannot collect the dots needed to progress.
