In Demolition Herby, released by Telesys in 1982 for the Atari 2600, you navigate a grid-based arena to paint lines and complete squares while avoiding pursuing vehicles. Drawing heavy inspiration from Amidar, the game adds a vehicular combat twist where you can rear-end the enemy tow truck, bulldozer, and squad car to temporarily clear the board.
How to play
Use the joystick to navigate Herby around the grid and paint lines. You must close off squares to progress and refill your constantly draining fuel gauge. Pressing the fire button (Spacebar) activates overdrive, giving you a burst of speed to escape enemies, but it consumes fuel rapidly and prevents you from painting lines while active. A unique two-player mode allows the second player to take control of the three enemy cars.
Tips
- Watch your fuel: Completing squares is the only way to replenish your fuel gauge, so prioritize closing small boxes quickly rather than drawing long, incomplete paths.
- Attack from behind: You can destroy enemy vehicles by rear-ending them. If you manage to clear all three from the board, you earn an overdrive bonus phase.
- Beware of erased lines: In later levels, enemies driving over your completed lines will revert them to white, forcing you to repaint them.
