Datsugoku is the Japanese version of the classic arcade beat ’em up P.O.W.: Prisoners of War, developed by SNK for the Famicom (NES). Players take on the role of a military prisoner who breaks out of captivity to fight their way through heavily armed enemy forces. Unlike the arcade original, this console port is a dedicated single-player experience but features exclusive new stages, distinct bosses, and extra weapons to use against the opposing soldiers.
How to Play
Your objective is to escape the enemy base by defeating waves of soldiers using hand-to-hand combat and any weapons you can scavenge, such as knives and machine guns. Use the D-pad (mapped to arrow keys) to move, A (X key) to jump, and B (Z key) to punch or kick. Pressing A and B together unleashes a backwards attack to deal with enemies sneaking up behind you. Press Start (Enter) to pause.
Tips
- Pick up brass knuckles early on, as they significantly increase your punching power.
- When facing multiple enemies, try to line them up so you can strike them simultaneously and avoid being surrounded.
- Enter open doorways or caves to find hidden rooms; defeating the enemies inside often rewards you with armor or health recovery items.
