Game description:

Released in 1997 by Kronos Digital Entertainment, Dark Rift is a 3D weapon-based fighting game for the Nintendo 64. Historically notable as the first N64 game to run at a smooth 60 frames per second, it features a sci-fi fantasy setting where diverse combatants battle for pieces of the coveted Master Core. Players choose from a starting roster of eight distinctive fighters, each armed with unique weaponry, to compete in fast-paced matches.

How to play

The objective is to defeat your opponent by depleting their health bar using a combination of strikes, weapon attacks, and special moves. On the Nintendo 64, use the D-pad or analog stick to move and jump, the A and B buttons for attacks, and the shoulder buttons to guard or sidestep. In the web browser, these map to the arrow keys for movement, Z and X for your primary attacks, and Enter to start or pause the game.

Tips

  • Take advantage of the 3D arenas by using sidesteps to dodge incoming projectiles and slow, heavy weapon strikes.
  • Each character has unique combo strings; practice chaining quick light attacks into a heavy weapon finisher to maximize damage when you find an opening.
