Released in 1993 for the SNES, Claymates is a unique platformer developed by Visual Concepts and published by Interplay. You play as Clayton, a boy who has been transformed into a ball of clay by an evil witch doctor. To rescue your kidnapped scientist father, you must navigate through a variety of quirky, clay-animated worlds and collect colored clay to morph into different animals, each granting you specific abilities needed to progress.
How to Play
Your main objective is to reach the end of each stage while avoiding hazards and enemies. Starting as a basic ball of clay, you can collect colored blobs to transform into five different animals: a mouse for navigating tight spaces, a cat for combat and climbing, a fish for swimming, a duck for flying, and a gopher for digging. Using the standard SNES browser controls, use the arrow keys to move, Z to jump, and X to attack or use your current form’s special ability. Taking damage will revert you back to the basic clay ball form.
Tips
- Use the right form for the job: Many puzzles and obstacles require a specific animal form. If you’re stuck, explore the area to find the colored clay you need to progress.
- Collect gems: Gather the gems scattered throughout the levels. Collecting enough of them will grant you extra lives, which become essential as the game’s difficulty ramps up.
