Chou-Wakusei Senki – MetaFight is the original 1988 Japanese Famicom/NES release of the game widely known in the West as Blaster Master, developed by Sunsoft. It is an ambitious sci-fi action-platformer that seamlessly blends side-scrolling vehicular combat with top-down on-foot exploration. Players control the advanced tank SOPHIA the 3rd, but can also exit the vehicle at any time to explore tight corridors and battle bosses as the pilot, Kane.
How to Play
The game relies on standard NES controls, mapped directly to your keyboard for browser play. Use the arrow keys to move your tank or pilot. Z and X act as the A and B buttons for jumping, firing weapons, and entering or exiting your vehicle. Press Enter (Start) to pause the game and access your sub-weapons menu, and use Shift (Select) to toggle between them.
Tips
- Explore thoroughly on foot: Bosses must be defeated in the top-down sections to earn permanent upgrades for your tank, like hover jets or wall-climbing, which open up new zones.
- Grenades are vital: Your pilot’s default gun has very short range. Rely on grenades to deal massive damage to overhead bosses from a safe distance.
- Watch your wheels: SOPHIA takes damage from long falls. Carefully navigate vertical drops to avoid losing health unnecessarily.
