Challenge of the Dragon is an unlicensed side-scrolling beat-’em-up released in 1990 for the NES. Originally developed by Joy Van under the title Chinese Kungfu and published by Sachen, this version was later rebranded for international distribution. Distinct from the Color Dreams game of the same name, this martial arts action game blends traditional street brawling with tricky cave platforming sections and one-on-one boss fights at the end of each stage.
How to Play
Your objective is to guide the martial artist through multiple stages of enemies, navigating treacherous platforming sections and defeating a boss to clear each level. Use the Arrow Keys to move, Z to attack, X to jump, Enter to start, and Shift for select.
Tips
- During the beat-’em-up sections, approach enemies from slightly above or below on the vertical plane to strike them without walking directly into their attacks.
- The cave sections focus heavily on platforming; take your time to learn the jump arcs and avoid rushing blindly into pits.
- Conserve your health for the end-of-stage boss fights, where the game shifts to a one-on-one duel format that requires careful blocking and counter-attacking.
