Released by Muse Software in 1981, Castle Wolfenstein is a seminal DOS action-shooter that helped pioneer the stealth genre. Instead of running and gunning, you must navigate a procedurally generated fortress, relying on disguise, evasion, and careful resource management to survive and complete your mission.
How to play
Your objective is to traverse the castle’s interconnected rooms, locate the secret war plans, and make it out alive. Ammunition is extremely scarce, so sneaking past guards or holding them up at gunpoint to search them for keys, bullets, and uniforms is often smarter than engaging in a firefight. Movement and aiming are handled independently via the keyboard.

Tips
- Search strategically: Looting bodies or chests takes valuable time. Ensure the room is clear or remaining enemies are far away before you start.
- Use disguises: Wearing a stolen enemy uniform allows you to pass regular guards unnoticed, but elite SS stormtroopers will still see through it.
- Conserve ammo: Firing your weapon will alert nearby guards in the same room. Use grenades sparingly to blast through locked doors or clear clustered enemies.
