Game description:

In Captain Skyhawk for the NES, you step into the cockpit of an F-14V fighter jet to defend Earth from a hostile alien invasion. Developed by Rare and released in 1990, this unique shooter blends classic vertical-scrolling action with an impressive isometric perspective. As you navigate the challenging 3D-style terrain, you will destroy enemy bases, engage in high-speed dogfights, and drop supplies to scientists working on a top-secret weapon to save the planet.

How to play

Your objective is to complete a series of missions by destroying alien bases, defeating bosses, and successfully docking with the space station to rearm. Use the arrow keys to pilot your jet. Press the Z key (NES A button) to fire your main cannons, and the X key (NES B button) to use your selected secondary weapons like Hawk Bombs or Phoenix Air-to-Air Missiles. Press Shift (Select) to toggle between your available special weapons, and Enter (Start) to pause the action.

Tips

  • During the isometric bombing missions, watch the altitude of the terrain carefully. You must actively pull up to avoid crashing into mountains and structures.
  • Save your powerful Phoenix missiles and Maverick bombs for the heavily armored alien bases and end-of-level bosses.
  • Successfully docking with the space station not only replenishes your special weapons but also repairs your ship’s shields. Take your time to line up the crosshairs during the docking sequence.
