Captain America and the Avengers (Europe) is the 1993 Super Nintendo port of Data East’s Marvel-licensed arcade beat ’em up, developed for SNES by Realtime Associates and published by Mindscape. It lets one to four players pick from Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, and the Vision as they fight through a gauntlet of Marvel villains to stop the Red Skull.
How to play
Each hero has their own hand-to-hand attacks and can throw items picked up from the ground, plus a signature ranged “Avenger Attack” — a thrown projectile for Captain America and Hawkeye, an energy beam for Iron Man and Vision. Several stages switch to airborne shooting sections, where Cap and Hawkeye ride flying vehicles while Iron Man and Vision simply fly under their own power. On the way to the Red Skull, expect to face Klaw, the Living Laser, Whirlwind, a Sentinel, the Wizard, the Grim Reaper, the Mandarin, Juggernaut, Ultron, the Controller, and Crossbones.
In the browser: arrow keys move, Z attacks, X jumps, A throws a nearby item, and S unleashes your character’s Avenger Attack.
Tips:
- Save your Avenger Attack for the boss at the end of each stage rather than burning it on regular enemies — it hits harder and has better range than your punches.
- Thrown items (barrels, debris, enemy weapons) often do more damage than a melee combo, so grab and throw whenever something’s on the ground near you.
- During the flight stages, stay mobile and prioritize incoming projectiles over ground targets — getting boxed in by cross-fire is the fastest way to lose a life.
