Game description:

Burai Fighter is a multi-directional shoot ’em up released for the NES in 1990 by Taxan. You control a heavily armed cyborg tasked with wiping out the Buraiโ€”a race of hyper-intelligent alien brainsโ€”across seven sprawling bases that constantly shift between side-scrolling, vertical, and top-down perspectives.

How to Play

Your objective is to navigate the shifting terrain of each base, destroy enemies, and defeat the boss at the end of the level. You can shoot in eight different directions independently of the way you are moving, allowing you to retreat while laying down cover fire. The NES controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the Arrow Keys to move, Z to shoot, X to deploy a screen-clearing cobalt bomb, Enter for Start, and Shift for Select.

Tips

  • Always pick up weapon pods (Laser, Missile, or Ring). Collecting the same weapon multiple times upgrades its power and spread.
  • Since you can fire in any direction, try locking your fire diagonally while moving vertically or horizontally to cover blind spots.
  • Save your cobalt bombs for boss fights or moments when the screen gets completely overwhelmed by enemies and projectiles.
