Bonkers (USA) is a side-scrolling platformer for the Super Nintendo, developed by Sun-L and published by Capcom in October 1994. It’s based on Disney’s Bonkers animated series, casting players as police officer Bonkers D. Bobcat, a former cartoon star turned Hollywood cop who must recover three treasures stolen from the Toontown museum: the Sorcerer’s Hat, the Mermaid’s Voice, and the Magic Lamp.
How to play
Bonkers runs through six Hollywood-themed levels — including a mansion, downtown streets, an ocean liner, a sewer, and a movie studio backlot with Old West and sci-fi sets — fighting toward a boss at the end of each. He can jump on enemies’ heads, throw bombs, or use a speed dash to smash through obstacles and foes alike. Balloons scattered through the levels drop useful items, shields raise how many bombs he can carry, donuts and cakes restore lost health, and hearts extend his health meter.
Default controls: Arrow keys to move and duck, Z to jump, X to throw a bomb, Enter for Start, and Shift for Select.
Tips
- Save your speed dash for enemies and obstacles that take multiple hits — it clears them faster than jumping or bombing alone.
- Grab every balloon you pass; the shields inside raise your bomb capacity, which matters most against the tougher end-of-level bosses.
- Recovery after taking a hit is slow, so it’s safer to back off and re-approach an enemy than to trade hits with it.
