Game description:

Bokosuka Wars is a pioneering action-strategy RPG developed by Koji Sumii and published for the NES in 1985. As an early precursor to the tactical RPG genre, you are tasked with guiding King Suren and his army across the map from right to left to defeat the evil emperor Ogeram. Instead of traditional turn-based menus, the game blends real-time movement with automated combat as units bump into each other.

The objective is to reach the enemy castle and defeat the leader without King Suren falling in battle. You must build your forces by bumping into trees and rocks to free soldiers and knights who have been cursed. In the browser, the NES controls are mapped to the arrow keys for movement, Z and X (A and B buttons) to toggle which group of units you are controlling, and Enter or Shift for Start and Select. Because you can control the king, soldiers, knights, or everyone at once, managing unit movement through obstacles is crucial.

  • Rescue your troops early: You begin the game alone. Spend time moving into trees and rocks to build up your army before advancing too far.
  • Save your knights: Knights are your most powerful units and are required to break down prison walls to free more soldiers. Keep them protected rather than sending them to the front lines.
  • Keep the King safe: If King Suren dies, it is an immediate game over. Always position him behind your troops and avoid using him in combat.
