Game description:

Beauty and the Beast is a 1995 action-platformer developed by Probe Software for the SNES. Based on the acclaimed Disney animated film, the game puts you in control of the Beast as he battles through his cursed castle and the surrounding forests to protect Belle and defeat Gaston. Unlike other adaptations of the film, this SNES version focuses heavily on combat and platforming, requiring you to navigate challenging environments filled with aggressive wildlife, animated statues, and enchanted hazards.

How to Play

As the Beast, your objective is to clear each level of enemies and obstacles to eventually confront Gaston. Your primary attack is a forward claw swipe, and you also possess a powerful roar that consumes a portion of your roar meter, freezing or damaging on-screen enemies. The default SNES controls map movement to the D-pad (arrow keys), jumping to the B button (Z), and attacking to the Y button (X).

Tips

  • Master the Beast’s roar ability early; freezing fast-moving enemies like bats or wolves is essential for safely navigating the tighter platforming sections.
  • The Beast’s swipe attack has a slight wind-up delay. Time your strikes just before an enemy comes into range rather than waiting until they are right next to you.
  • Explore vertical paths and dead ends in the castle levels to find hidden items, including extra lives and health-restoring roses.
