Developed by Interplay and released for DOS in 1988, Battle Chess transforms the traditional strategy board game into a medieval combat simulator. While the underlying engine follows standard chess rules, its lasting appeal lies in the humorous, fully animated fight sequences that play out whenever one piece captures another.
How to play
The objective is identical to standard chess: checkmate the opponent’s king. You can play against the computer or challenge a second player locally. In the browser, you can use the mouse to drag and drop pieces, or navigate the board using the keyboard arrow keys and Enter to confirm your moves. Press ‘Right Alt’ + ‘Enter’ to toggle full-screen mode.
Tips
- If the lengthy battle sequences start to slow down your match, you can disable the 3D animations in the menu to play a faster, standard 2D game of chess.
- The capture animations change depending on the specific combination of pieces fighting. Try capturing the King with a Knight to see a nod to Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
