Game description:

Developed by Rare and released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64, Banjo-Kazooie is a defining 3D platformer that follows a bear and his bird companion on a quest to rescue Banjo’s sister Tooty from the witch Gruntilda. Renowned for its tight controls, expansive worlds, and signature British humor, the game established a standard for the collect-a-thon genre. Players explore varied environments, learning new moves from Bottles the mole to solve puzzles and uncover hidden secrets.

How to Play

The objective is to collect Jiggies (jigsaw pieces) to open new worlds in Gruntilda’s Lair, alongside Musical Notes used to bypass magical doors. The Nintendo 64 controls map to your keyboard: use the Arrow Keys to move, X to jump (A button), C to attack (B button), and Z to crouch (Z trigger). Press Enter to pause (Start). You will need to combine these buttonsโ€”like pressing Z then Xโ€”to execute Kazooie’s special moves.

Tips

  • Find Bottles early: In every new world, seek out molehills first to learn the moves required to reach the area’s Jiggies.
  • Be careful with Notes: In this original Nintendo 64 version, your Musical Note high score for a world is saved, but if you die or leave the level, all notes physically respawn and your current counter resets to zero. Try to collect all 100 in a single, careful run.
  • Use the Talon Trot: Once unlocked, the Talon Trot (Z + X) is the fastest way to travel and is required to climb steep, slippery slopes.
