Game description:

Astyanax is a side-scrolling action-platformer released for the NES in 1990 by Jaleco. Though it shares its name with the arcade original, this console version is a distinct adventure with its own anime-inspired art style and RPG elements. You play as a high school student transported to the fantasy realm of Remlia, wielding a magic axe to rescue Princess Rosebud from the evil wizard Blackhorn.

How to Play

Battle through each stage using your weapon and magic spells to defeat Blackhorn’s monstrous army. Your standard controls for the NES are the D-pad to move, A to jump, and B to attack, which map to the arrow keys, Z, and X on your keyboard (with Enter for Start and Shift for Select). You can cast your currently selected magic spell by pressing Up and B simultaneously.

Tips

  • Your attack power is tied to the gauge at the bottom of the screen. It depletes when you swing and recharges when you rest, so time your strikes carefully for maximum damage instead of button-mashing.
  • Break the stone pillars scattered throughout the levels to find items. The weapon power-up will transform your starting axe into a longer-reaching spear, and eventually into a powerful sword.
  • Save your magic points (MP) for the boss at the end of each stage. A well-timed spell can wipe out huge chunks of a boss’s health.
