Astrosmash is a fixed shooter developed by Mattel Electronics and released for the Atari 2600 in 1981. Controlling a laser base at the bottom of the screen, you must defend against a continuous barrage of falling meteors, spinning bombs, and guided missiles before they reach the ground.
How to play
Use the arrow keys to move your base left and right, and press the Spacebar to fire. Your score increases as you destroy targets, but uniquely for a shooter of its era, it decreases whenever a meteor slips past you and strikes the surface.
Tips
- Focus on intercepting the larger meteors first; they split into smaller fragments when shot, giving you more targets to clear.
- Keep moving to avoid the white spinners, which are indestructible bombs that will destroy your ship on contact.
