Asteroids is the classic 1979 action shooter brought to the Atari 2600 by Atari Inc. Piloting a lone spaceship through a dangerous asteroid field, players must blast floating space rocks before they collide with the ship, while also fending off hostile flying saucers. The wrap-around screen and physics-based thrust mechanics made it an iconic arcade experience that translated wonderfully to the home console.
How to play
Your goal is to clear the screen of all asteroids to advance to the next, more difficult wave. Shooting a large asteroid splits it into two medium ones, which in turn split into small, fast-moving fragments.
Controls: Steer your ship using the arrow keys (Up for thrust, Left/Right to rotate). Fire your weapon with the Spacebar, and pull down (Down arrow) for hyperspace to teleport to a random location on the screen.
Tips
- Limit your thrust: it is easy to lose control of your ship’s momentum. Rely on brief, controlled taps to maneuver safely.
- Pick off the small asteroids first, as they move the fastest and are the most dangerous.
- Use hyperspace only as a last resort when you are completely trapped, as you might reappear directly in the path of a rock.
