Alpha Mission is a 1985 vertical scrolling shoot ’em up brought to the NES by SNK. You pilot the SYD fighter through waves of alien attackers, dodging dense bullet patterns while destroying targets on two different planes. Rather than relying on simple weapon upgrades, the game features a modular armor system where you collect parts from destroyed ground bases to build and deploy specialised ships.
How to play
Pilot the SYD fighter through hostile territory, managing both airborne threats and ground installations. Your ship is equipped with two separate weapon systems: lasers for aerial enemies and missiles for ground targets. Destroying ground bases reveals energy power-ups and letters that build your modular armor stock. Once you have enough energy and the right parts, you can deploy specialised armors to overcome overwhelming odds.

Tips
- Prioritise ground targets: Missiles have a limited range, so position yourself carefully to bomb ground bases. They are your primary source of power-ups and armor parts.
- Manage your energy: Deploying an armor slowly drains your energy gauge, and taking a hit while armored depletes it significantly. Deactivate your armor when the immediate threat is clear to conserve energy for the boss.
- Watch what you shoot: Not all ground letters are helpful. Shooting a letter changes it, and picking up a negative power-up can downgrade your ship or drain your energy.
