Air Fortress is a unique hybrid action game released for the NES in 1989 by HAL Laboratory. The game seamlessly blends two distinct styles of gameplay: a side-scrolling shoot ’em up approach followed by an on-foot action-platforming infiltration. As Hal Bailman, your mission is to destroy a fleet of massive titular fortresses threatening the planet Farmel.
How to Play
Each level consists of two phases. First, you pilot a lightship through the fortress’s outer defenses in a side-scrolling shooter segment. Once you breach the airlock, you explore the labyrinthine interior on foot, searching for the core. You must destroy the core and escape before the fortress explodes. Use the D-pad (Arrow keys) to move or fly, the A button (Z key) to jump or accelerate, and the B button (X key) to fire your weapons.
Tips
- Conserve resources: The energy and bombs you gather during the space shooter phase carry over to the on-foot exploration phase, where they act as both your health and ammunition.
- Manage your energy: Every shot fired inside the fortress drains your energy reserves, so avoid wasting ammo on minor enemies when possible.
- Map the maze: The later fortresses become complex, sprawling mazes. Memorizing the route or drawing a map can help you quickly locate the core and escape in time.
