After Burner II is a fast-paced rail shooter originally developed by Sega for the arcades and ported to the NES (Famicom in Japan) in 1989. You pilot an F-14 Tomcat fighter jet through a series of pseudo-3D stages, taking on endless waves of enemy fighters. Known for its high speed and continuous action, the game requires you to manage your lock-on missiles and constantly dodge heavy incoming fire.
How to play
Your goal is to survive all 23 stages by shooting down enemy jets while avoiding their missiles. Use the arrow keys to maneuver your jet and line up your crosshairs. Press Z to fire your Vulcan cannon, and press X to launch a lock-on missile when an enemy is targeted. Enter acts as Start, and Shift acts as Select. You can perform a barrel roll to evade incoming fire by quickly tapping left or right.
Tips
Keep your jet moving in a circular or figure-eight pattern to make yourself a harder target for enemy missiles. Rely on your Vulcan cannon for standard enemies, and save your limited lock-on missiles for large formations or fast-moving jets. Keep an eye out for the friendly supply plane that appears every few stages to restock your missile payload.
