Game description:

Action in New York (originally released as S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team in North America and Final Mission in Japan) is a sci-fi side-scrolling shoot 'em up released for the NES by Natsume in 1992. In the year 2029, an alien force led by Vile Malmort invades Earth, and it is up to the heavily armed, jetpack-equipped soldiers of the Special Cybernetic Attack Team to repel the threat. The game stands out for its unique movement mechanics, allowing players to fly freely around the screen and position orbiting satellite options that provide supplementary firepower.

How to Play

As a free-flying shooter, you navigate the screen to dodge incoming fire and blast through waves of alien invaders. The NES default controls apply: use the D-pad (mapped to Arrow Keys in the browser) to move your character in all eight directions, press B (Z) to fire your main weapon, and press A (X) to lock the position of your two satellite pods or let them rotate automatically. Start (Enter) pauses the game.

Tips

  • Master the satellite lock mechanic: you can stop your pods in place by pressing A (X). This is crucial for directing concentrated fire at bosses or angling shots through narrow passages without putting yourself in danger.
  • Collect weapon power-ups strategically: grab the “L” power-up for a devastating piercing laser or the “B” power-up to unleash explosive bombs that cover a wider area.
  • You only have a single life bar that absorbs limited hits, but recovering health items mid-stage will keep you in the fight. Avoid getting cornered by the auto-scrolling screen.
