3-D WorldRunner is a fast-paced, forward-scrolling action-platformer developed by Square for the NES in 1987. Predating the studio’s shift to role-playing games, the release places you in the role of Jack as you sprint through pseudo-3D environments, leaping over bottomless pits, dodging obstacles, and battling alien forces across different worlds. It notably featured an option for stereoscopic 3D using anaglyph glasses.
How to play
The objective is to reach the end of each world before the timer runs out, culminating in a boss battle against a serpent-like creature. You are constantly moving forward; use the Left and Right arrow keys to steer, press X to jump, and press Z to fire missiles once you pick up a laser power-up. Press Enter to start or pause.
Tips
- Timing your jumps is critical, as your fast movement speed and the faux-3D perspective can make judging the distance of oncoming pits tricky.
- Jump into columns to uncover hidden power-ups, like invincibility or the laser, but be careful not to touch the hostile creatures that might spawn instead.
- During boss encounters, focus on staying aligned with the serpent’s head to land rapid hits before it can overwhelm you.
