Game description:

3-D Block is an unlicensed 1989 puzzle game for the NES, developed by Hwang Shinwei. An early adaptation of Blockout, it brings a three-dimensional twist to falling-block mechanics. Instead of a flat screen, you view a 5x5x10 well from a top-down perspective, manoeuvring and rotating geometric shapes in 3D space to form solid layers that clear from the board.

How to Play

The objective is to survive as long as possible by completing full horizontal layers to clear them, preventing the well from filling up. Controls for this browser version map the NES standard: use the Arrow keys to move the falling blocks in the well, and Z/X to rotate them. In a unique quirk for this title, the Start (Enter) button instantly drops the block to the bottom, while Select (Shift) is used to pause the game.

Tips

  • Plan ahead: Because the well is only a 5×5 grid, gaps fill up quickly. Focus on keeping the center relatively flat so you have room to manoeuvre larger pieces.
  • Mind the drop: Since Start immediately drops the block rather than just speeding it up, make absolutely sure your piece is aligned perfectly before pressing it.
