1942 is a classic vertical-scrolling shoot ’em up originally developed by Capcom, with the NES port arriving in 1985. Set in the Pacific theater of World War II, you pilot a P-38 Lightning fighter plane, taking on waves of enemy aircraft to reach Tokyo. As one of Capcom’s earliest major hits, it laid the foundation for the 194X series and helped define the modern scrolling shooter genre.

How to Play

Your goal is to survive 32 stages of enemy attacks while shooting down as many planes as possible. You can dodge enemy fire using a limited number of loops, which grant temporary invincibility.

• Move: Arrow Keys
• Shoot: Z or X
• Loop (Dodge): X or Z
• Start/Pause: Enter

Tips

• Save your loops: You only get a limited number of loops per stage. Save them for when you are completely trapped by enemy fire or when a large boss aircraft covers the screen with bullets.
• Hunt the red squadrons: Formations of red enemy planes drop power-ups when the entire group is destroyed. These can upgrade your main guns or give you two friendly wingmen for extra firepower.
• Watch your wingmen: The wingmen double your width and make you a larger target. While they add great firepower, be extra careful navigating through tight bullet patterns when they are active.
