Star Wars: The Arcade Game is Parker Brothers’ Atari 2600 port of Atari’s groundbreaking 1983 vector-graphics arcade original. You fly an X-wing in first-person, recreating the Death Star assault from A New Hope across three looping phases: a TIE fighter battle in open space, a surface run over the Death Star dodging and destroying gun emplacements, and the trench run ending with the shot into the thermal exhaust port. The 2600 version renders the arcade’s wire-frame vectors in colour raster graphics and increases speed with each completed cycle.
How to Play
Your joystick moves the ship or crosshair through each phase; the trigger fires. In the browser, use the arrow keys to aim and steer, Spacebar to fire, and Del for rapid fire. In the space phase, track TIE fighters as they close in and shoot before they reach you. On the Death Star surface, weave around cannon blasts while targeting the gun emplacements. In the trench, steer clear of obstacles and centre your crosshair on the exhaust port at the end of the run. Finishing the trench shot closes the loop â the next cycle runs faster and scores higher.
