Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island is a seminal 1995 action-platformer developed by Nintendo for the SNES. Pushing the console’s capabilities with the Super FX 2 chip, it introduced a distinctive hand-drawn art style. Rather than playing as Mario, you control a clan of Yoshis working together to safely carry Baby Mario across the island to reunite him with his brother Luigi.
How to Play
Your main objective is to reach the end of each level without letting Baby Mario get kidnapped. When Yoshi takes a hit, Baby Mario floats away in a bubble, and a countdown timer begins; you must recover him before it reaches zero. Yoshi can eat enemies to produce eggs, which can then be thrown to defeat other enemies or hit distant switches.
- Move / Ground Pound: Arrow keys
- Jump / Flutter Jump (B): X
- Tongue / Swallow (Y): A
- Aim / Throw Egg (A): Z
- Cancel Aim (X): S
- Lock Aim (L/R): Q / E
- Start / Pause: Enter
Tips
- Hold the jump button while in mid-air to perform Yoshi’s signature flutter jump, allowing you to cross wide gaps or recover from a missed landing.
- Press down while in the air to execute a Ground Pound. This is essential for driving wooden posts into the ground, which often hides secret items or opens new paths.
- To fully complete a level with a score of 100, you must collect all 5 flowers, all 20 red coins (often disguised as regular coins), and finish with 30 seconds on your star timer.
