Game description:

Released in 1999 by Konami, Castlevania brought the legendary vampire-hunting franchise into 3D on the Nintendo 64. This atmospheric action-adventure follows Reinhardt Schneider and Carrie Fernandez as they navigate the treacherous halls of Dracula’s castle, offering a distinctive, methodical take on the series’ classic formula.

How to Play

Your objective is to explore the sprawling castle, solve environmental puzzles, and defeat formidable bosses to ultimately confront Dracula. You can choose between Reinhardt’s traditional whip or Carrie’s homing magic, which provide different playstyles. For the Nintendo 64, use the joystick to move, A to jump, B to attack, and the C-buttons to adjust the camera and use secondary items. When playing in your browser, the joystick is typically mapped to the arrow keys, with A and B on X and C, and the C-buttons on I, J, K, and L.

Tips

  • Manage the clock: The game features a real-time day and night cycle. Enemies are stronger at night, and certain events or doors only trigger at specific times, so use Sun and Moon cards to manipulate the clock when needed.
  • Control the camera: Mastering the camera is crucial for survival. Use the C-buttons frequently to adjust your view, especially before attempting tricky platforming jumps.
  • Play to your strengths: Carrie’s homing orbs are excellent for dealing with fast enemies from a safe distance, making her campaign slightly more forgiving, while Reinhardt’s whip demands precise timing for close-quarters combat.
