Yume Penguin Monogatari (also known as Dream Penguin Adventure) is a quirky platformer and shoot-’em-up hybrid developed by Konami for the NES in 1991. You play as Penta the penguin, who has been dumped by his girlfriend Penko for gaining too much weight. Instead of a traditional health bar, the game uses a fitness meter. Enemies will throw food at you to make you fatter, while collecting fitness drinks helps you slim down. If you reach the end of the stage while too overweight, Penko will reject you, forcing you to try again.
How to Play
Your objective is to reach the end of each stageโwhich alternate between side-scrolling platforming and shoot-’em-up flying sectionsโwhile maintaining a slim figure. Use the default NES browser mapping: the Arrow keys to move, Z and X for the A and B buttons (to jump and attack), and Enter for Start. Penta’s attack changes based on his weight, ranging from a projectile shot when thin to a belly-flop when fat.
Tips
- Avoid food items at all costs! Enemies don’t just damage you; they throw food that forces you to eat, rapidly adding to your weight meter.
- Your mobility and attack range are severely reduced when Penta is overweight, so prioritize collecting fitness drinks to stay thin and maintain your ranged attack.
