Game description:

Sansuu 3 Nen – Keisan Game (็ฎ—ๆ•ฐ3ๅนด ใ‘ใ„ใ•ใ‚“ใ‚ฒใƒผใƒ , “Arithmetic Year 3: Calculation Game”) is a 1986 educational Famicom/NES title from Tokyo Shoseki, the Japanese textbook publisher, built to drill third-grade multiplication and division. Instead of worksheets, it hides its times-tables and division problems inside four short arcade mini-games – steering a submarine past depth charges, climbing a skyscraper, dodging UFOs as a jetpack-wearing space cadet, and driving a car through a maze – where picking the number that completes the sum on screen is how you keep moving. It’s the third entry in a five-game Tokyo Shoseki series covering grades one through six, all released in 1986.

How to Play

Each mode drops you into a quick, arcade-style challenge: a math problem appears, and you steer your character toward the correct answer among the ones shown while dodging that mode’s hazards. Two of the four modes drill multiplication and two drill division, one or two players can take part, and dividing by zero always resolves to zero. You’re allowed five wrong answers per game before it ends, so there’s room to guess and check.

NES controls, mapped for browser play: D-pad + A/B + Start/Select become the arrow keys + Z/X + Enter/Shift.

Tips

  • Five mistakes end the round, so if you’re unsure of an answer it’s safe to test one and adjust rather than freezing up.
  • Remember that any division problem with zero as the divisor always resolves to zero – an easy free pass when it comes up.
