Pinball Quest is a unique hybrid for the NES that blends classic pinball mechanics with role-playing elements. Developed by TOSE and published by Jaleco, the game features a distinct RPG mode where players guide a pinball protagonist upward through multi-screen scrolling tables, defeating enemies, battling bosses, and purchasing upgrades from shops along the way. In addition to the main quest, the game includes three standard pinball tables with different themes: Pop! Pop!, Viva! Golf, and Circus.
How to Play
In the RPG mode, your goal is to ascend through the levels by hitting the ball past enemies and obstacles, ultimately defeating the boss to progress. You can use the gold you collect from defeated enemies to buy stronger flippers and table stoppers. The game uses standard NES web emulator controls: the Arrow keys act as the D-pad, Z and X are the A and B action buttons, Enter is Start, and Shift is Select. In gameplay, the D-pad and action buttons are typically used to control the left and right flippers respectively.
Tips
- In the RPG mode, always prioritize buying the “Stoppers” upgrade first. They block the drains at the bottom of the screen, giving you extra security and making the upward climb much more forgiving.
- You can farm gold by repeatedly hitting weaker enemies on the lower screens before moving up to face more difficult bosses.
- Don’t forget to try the Viva! Golf table, which requires you to hit specific targets in sequence to sink the “putt,” offering a fun change of pace from the main quest.
