Motocross Champion is a 1989 Famicom racer developed by Human Entertainment and published by Konami, released only in Japan — this English version comes from a fan translation by Suicidal (v1.0). Rather than the side-scrolling style of Excitebike, it uses an overhead, top-down view across eight circular off-road circuits, closer in feel to Super Sprint or R.C. Pro-Am, with jumps, obstacles, and crowds of spectators lining every course.
How to play
Race a qualifying heat on each course first: finish in the top two and you go straight to the final, finish lower and you’re dropped into a losers’ bracket for another shot at qualifying. At the start line, hold the accelerator and tap up on the D-pad to keep the front wheel down and avoid a wheelie. In the browser, steer with the arrow keys and use Z and X for the B and A buttons, with Enter for Start.
Tips
- Qualify in the top two on your first attempt when you can — the losers’ bracket means racing an extra heat before you get another shot at the final.
- Tap the D-pad up right from the start rather than waiting until you’re already wheelying; it’s easier to prevent than to correct.
- How you place across the whole tournament decides which ending you get — a strong run reveals your rider’s face without the helmet.
