Game description:

Mach Rider is an early vehicular combat racer released by Nintendo for the NES in 1985. Set in a desolate, post-apocalyptic future, you pilot a heavily armed motorcycle across winding highways to search for survivors. The game combines high-speed arcade racing with combat as you maneuver through varied terrains while destroying enemy Quadrunners and dodging hazards.

Your objective in the primary Fighting Course is to survive the treacherous roads and reach the end of each sector before you are destroyed too many times. You must rely on quick reflexes to shift gears, avoid obstacles, and gun down enemies. The standard NES controls map to your keyboard: use the Arrow Keys to steer and shift gears, press Z (A button) to accelerate, and press X (B button) to fire your machine gun. Press Enter for Start and Shift for Select.

  • Use your mirrors: Keep an eye on the rear-view mirrors at the top of the screen to anticipate enemies approaching from behind before they ram into you.
  • Shift gears properly: You must manually shift up to reach top speed, but remember to downshift if you crash or need to carefully navigate around dense obstacles like oil slicks.
  • Weaponize the terrain: You can bump enemy Quadrunners into hazards like barrels and rocks instead of always relying on your machine gun fire.
