Released in 1986 by Chunsoft and Enix, Dragon Quest (Japan) is the foundational role-playing game that established the template for the console RPG genre. Set in the realm of Alefgard, you play as a lone hero destined to reclaim the stolen Sphere of Light and defeat the tyrannical Dragonlord. This original NES release features classic top-down exploration, random encounters, and purely one-on-one turn-based combat.
How to Play
The objective is to explore the world, level up by fighting monsters, buy better equipment, and eventually infiltrate the Dragonlord’s castle. You interact with the world through a command menu to talk, search, take stairs, and check your status. In the browser, the standard NES controls apply: move using the arrow keys, confirm actions and open the menu with Z (A button), cancel with X (B button), and use Enter/Shift for Start and Select.
Tips
- Talk to everyone: Townspeople provide vital clues about where to go next and where key items like the Sunstones or the Silver Harp are hidden.
- Level up safely: Heal at the inn in Tantegel Castle or Brecconary town when your HP gets low. Don’t venture too far across bridges until you have upgraded your weapon and armor, as enemy strength jumps significantly in new regions.
- Light your way: Dungeons are completely dark. Always carry a Torch or learn the Radiant spell to see your surroundings underground.
