Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is an infamous 1989 side-scrolling action game for the NES that gained a notorious reputation for its punishing mechanics. You are tasked with guiding Dr. Jekyll across town on the way to his wedding. However, the streets are filled with aggressive townsfolk, bombs, and stray animals. When Dr. Jekyll takes too much damage, his stress meter fills, and he transforms into his monstrous alter ego.
As Mr. Hyde, the environment shifts into a demonic, fast-paced world where you must fight off monsters to relieve your stress and transform back into Dr. Jekyll. A constant threat looms over the adventure: if Mr. Hyde manages to advance further in his dark world than Dr. Jekyll has in the normal world, lightning will strike and instantly end the game.
How to Play
Your objective as Dr. Jekyll is to reach the church while avoiding as much damage as possible, using evasion rather than combat. As Mr. Hyde, you must aggressively defeat demons to revert to your human form.
- Arrow Keys: Move
- Z Key: Jump
- X Key: Attack (Cane poke for Jekyll, Psycho-Wave for Hyde)
- Enter: Start
Tips
- Avoid confrontation: Dr. Jekyll's cane attack only affects bees. For all other hazards, your best strategy is jumping and evasion.
- Bribe the singer: The woman singing musical notes can deal heavy damage. If you collect enough coins, you can give them to her so she stops singing.
- Optimize Hyde's attacks: Mr. Hyde's Psycho-Wave projectile travels in a strange upward arc. Jumping right before you fire will help it hit enemies more effectively.
