World Cup USA ’94 is the official top-down soccer game of the 1994 tournament for the SNES, developed by Tiertex Design Studios. Played from a fast-paced bird’s eye perspective, it features all 24 qualified nations from the American-hosted World Cup. The match engine stands out by using a free-ball dribbling system rather than sticking the ball to the player’s feet, creating a challenging, arcade-like feel that rewards precise control.
How to play
The objective is to win the World Cup tournament by advancing through the group stages and knockout rounds. The default SNES controls use the D-pad for movement. Press B to pass, Y to shoot, A for a lob or long pass, and X to perform a sliding tackle. Since the ball moves independently, you must physically guide your player into the ball to keep it under control while sprinting.
Tips
- Master the dribble: Because the ball doesn’t stick to your feet, tapping the D-pad to take smaller touches is much safer than holding a direction when defenders are nearby.
- Use the radar: The top-down view limits how much of the pitch you can see. Keep an eye on the scanner at the bottom of the screen to spot open teammates before attempting long passes.
