Game description:

Millipede is Atari’s 1982 sequel to Centipede, developed and published by Atari, Inc. for the Atari 2600. It keeps the core mechanic of its predecessor — blast a segmented millipede as it winds down through a mushroom field — and expands the formula with a wider cast of insects, each with distinct behaviour that keeps rounds feeling fresh and unpredictable.

How to Play

Move your shooter along the bottom of the screen and fire upward to destroy the millipede segment by segment before it reaches you. Every hit segment turns into a mushroom, and mushrooms redirect the millipede’s path downward. Clearing the field as you go matters: a cluttered mushroom field hands the millipede more routes to reach you.

Millipede adds several new insects beyond Centipede’s roster:

  • Earwigs poison mushrooms on contact — any millipede segment that touches a poisoned mushroom ignores the field entirely and charges straight to the bottom.
  • DDT bombs explode when shot, clearing mushrooms and killing insects caught in the blast radius.
  • Spiders bounce erratically through the lower play area; they are dangerous but worth large point bonuses.
  • Beetles, bees, dragonflies, mosquitoes, and inchworms each add their own wrinkle — altering the field, multiplying threats, or changing the millipede’s speed.

Tips

  • Make earwigs your first target — a single earwig left alive can poison the entire upper field and let the millipede bypass all your carefully cleared space.
  • Detonate DDT bombs when the millipede is passing through the blast zone for multi-segment kills; a well-timed DDT can wipe out more of the millipede than a full barrage of shots.
  • Use the mushroom field deliberately: a dense cluster on one side channels the millipede into a predictable lane and gives you a cleaner shot.
