Game description:

Developed by Kawada and released for the NES in 1986, Othello is a digital adaptation of the classic strategy board game. Two playersโ€”or one against the computerโ€”compete to dominate an 8×8 grid by trapping and flipping their opponent’s pieces, making it a pure test of foresight and tactical positioning.

How to play

The objective is to have the majority of the disks on the board showing your color when no more moves can be made. On your turn, place a disk so that it sandwiches at least one of your opponent’s pieces between the piece you just placed and another of your own color. All flanked opponent pieces then flip to your color.

Tips

  • Control the corners: Corners are the most valuable spaces on the board because pieces placed there can never be flipped by your opponent.
  • Beware the danger zones: Avoid placing your pieces in the squares immediately adjacent to the corners (especially diagonally), as this often gives your opponent the opening they need to capture a corner on their next turn.
  • Limit opponent mobility: Try to make moves that flip fewer pieces in the early game to restrict your opponent’s available moves later on.
