Infiltrate an underground terrorist base in Heavy Barrel, a top-down action shooter released by Data East for DOS in 1987. Playing as a lone commando or alongside a friend in two-player co-op, your mission is to blast through enemy forces and assemble the game’s titular superweapon to defeat the terrorist threat.

How to play

Navigate the vertically scrolling levels and shoot enemies while dodging incoming fire. Your primary goal is to find red keys dropped by certain enemies, which can be used to unlock weapon crates scattered throughout the stages. These crates contain special weapons like spread guns, lasers, and grenades, but most importantly, they hold the six pieces needed to build the devastating Heavy Barrel weapon. Since keyboard controls vary for DOS games, press the arrows or numpad for movement and standard action keys (like Ctrl, Alt, or Space) to fire and use grenades.

Tips

• The Heavy Barrel is temporary: Once you assemble all six pieces of the superweapon, it only lasts for a limited time (about 30 seconds), so save the final piece for boss fights or heavily fortified areas.
• Manage your keys: You can only carry a limited number of keys at once. Prioritize opening crates even if you already have a good weapon, as you need to find those Heavy Barrel pieces.
• Use cover: The terrain often features walls and obstacles that block enemy fire but also restrict your movement. Use them strategically to funnel enemies or shield yourself.
